Description

Basset Hound - Medium - Senior - Female - Dog - Dixie

www.lasvegasbassetrescue.com Dixie (Special Needs) has been with LVBR for 3 years now. She was relinquished by her owner when she was 8 years old and is now 11. Very soon after coming into rescue it was determined that Dixie had Addison's Disease. This is treated with monthly injections of a drug called Percorten-V (approx. $100 per injection), along with low daily doses of prednisone (approx $10 per month). Basically, Addison's is a condition where the adrenal gland is not producing enough essential hormones to support the body. This disease is a death sentence if not treated properly. You can read more about Addison's disease (symptoms & treatments) at the support site www.addisondogs.com Over time, the interval between Percorten-V injections can be stretched. In Dixie's case she does well, at this time, with a Percorten shot once every 2-3 months. The prednisone must continue to be given daily, without fail. With treatment, Addisons dogs can live very normal lives. Dixie has also developed bladder incontinence, and takes meds twice a day to help control it. With the expense of ongoing treatment, and her advancing age, Dixie's never been chosen for adoption. But she feels adopted because over the last three years she's had a devoted foster family. LVBR wishes to acknowledge and thank Molly Gibbons and her son, Tyler, for the love and care they continue to lavish on this special hound. Dixie will remain as an LVBR Forever Foster and live out her life with dignity. Please read Molly's recent update on Dixie: "Dixie is such a happy and loving dog. She adores anyone who is willing to give her even a brief pet or speak to her in a loving way. Over the years she's always welcomed the new foster dogs that come and go. Dixie's Addisons Disease--and her incontinence--require her to take medication every day. She waits every evening after I take my own medicines for her turn to get hers. She loves to have it in turkey or bread. She enjoys sleeping on her special bed in her designated area next to the kitchen table. Her bedding is washed several times a week due to her occasional urine leaks. She's especially fond of Tinkerbell, our Corgi/Dachshund mix, and will often paw at Tink to get her attention. Tink will play along and nip at Dixie's feet. The two of them will then run down the hallway--the rest of the gang joining the merry chase. Dixie is also helpful at laundry time. She paws and scratches at my leg as I load laundry in the washer or dryer, because she knows when it's done she'll have her clean bed back. She's prone to ear infections and requires frequent ear washings--which she hates. In fact, when the bottle of ear cleaning solution comes out, she makes a run for the doggie door. She can be quite the noise maker if she hears anything out of the ordinary. Dixie aims to warn whoever--or whatever--may be lurking around that there's a ferocious beast waiting for them if they dare to enter! In reality, what they'll get is friendly tail wagging. She's a big love muffin who has blessed our home for the past several years." Dixie wishes to gather Angels to help with the ongoing cost of her medications.
